High Pass Editing

I shot this last night because I am trying to mess around with high pass editing. It isn't easy to get things to look right, but here is my 3rd attempt. Another was a fire truck and the other was a tonka truck and my son.. .both came out much more poor. This one is passable.

I just wanted to ask if anyone else has had experience with this type of editing and if they could give any tips. I do not want critique, it's a crappy portrait shot of me. What I want is technical advice on high pass or ultra high def editing, if anyone can help me out.

I'm only somewhat familiar with this technique but I'd like to investigate it a bit more for my own learning.

What software are you using? and can you post the original (I'd like to see the sharpness)

Here is a crop of the original as it was before editing. I took it last night after work because I wanted to do this tonight so the focus wasn't really dead on or anything... just a quick tripod shot then I went to bed... but I wanted it at night because I thought it might turn out better...

If you used photoshop, then I might have a suggestion. What are you trying to accomplish? A surrealistic effect or increased sharpening.

Well, you have certainly proved that high pass editing does not create flattering portraits.

Not sure if it is any help but there is an in depth article with Dave Hill in the UK camera mag "Digital SLR Photography" where he gives some insoght into his techniques. Not sure if you can get this where you are, but it is in the September 2008 edition.

Awesome... I get a few UK mags, I don't know why I don't get that one... Now, I just have to think of something convincing to tell the wife so that I can get a subscription. How does "It is for the survival of our family." sound? Something like that... I'll keep thinking... Thanks for the heads up on that Taffy.
