Composition question
Hello all, Love this forum have been following it for some time and wanted to post. I really like this photo i took for its simpleness but I'm not sure about its compositional merits. It breaks the rule of thirds and is weighed towards the edges. I feel like the rock balances out the boat but I question the emptiness in the centre. Is the composition flawed? Your thoughts are much appreciated!

To answer your question directly, I believe the composition is flawed.
I don't see the usefulness in keeping the rock in the frame.... imo the image is stronger without the rock. I'd likely crop it out in post if it were mine.
I agree with your instinct, the boat is a bit too close to the edge....if you are not against cloning, you could likely clone that right edge to add an inch or 2 to the right side for a better balance.

I agree with Marko, the rock hurts the image and the boat is not positioned well. The good thing is, practice your cloning, move the boat to one of the cross points of the rule of thirds, and crop (or clone out the rocks).
The color is amazing!!! Your water horizon is nice and level.

thank you both for you advise. I really appreciate your feedback. I find that there is just so much things to consider as you are about to hit the shutter button and composition is just one of those key elements that can really hurt a photo if poorly constructed. Getting that shot that brings all the elements together is a real art form.

I must agree with the others about the rock, and agree extending to the right would help in my opinion.
Having said that there is lot to like about this. The colour and horizontal lines work well, and the posture of the people in the boat in silhouette are great IMO
