As for a critique, technically, I don't really see anything wrong with this image. It has a strong message, great composition. Really, nothing to critique.

As for the message, I find the message as a good thing. The closing of a big box store is usually a good thing for local retailers. The empty parking lot in front of Target says the same thing. The message says two things, "slow business for the economy in the city" or "people are shopping locally". I take it as the second message.

Taking the time to get the angle was worth it. Having both the closing Future Shop and the closing Target in the same shot was a good idea. AT may not be aware of it but both of these stores are going out of business in Canada which is the telling story here.

I am aware of the closings of the stores, but I am not sure of the message, is it good or bad? Some would say it is good that these "big box" stores are closing, it helps the local retailers. Others would say it is bad because people are losing jobs.

Here in Baton Rouge, there is a major campaign to get people back to shopping locally and getting away from the big box stores. The money spent stays local, not going to some home office somewhere else.

It's bad imo due to the loss of jobs.
People will just keep shopping online or in remaining big box stores and so most of the money won't make it to a local retailer.... (who almost always have higher prices anyway since they don't have the buying.... power which is a major turnoff for the vast vast majority of people). In Quebec, we are special because the majority are French in a country where the majority are English. So we too have/had that shop local mentality....until Walmart came to Quebec around 15 years ago. Lo and behold all that shop local talk turned to BS when way cheaper prices became far more important.

It's tough all over. Hard to compete with Amazon.com and smaller internet retailers who have nearly no overhead.
