Thank-you again for allowing me to post these newbie shots here. I feel like a child in Kindergarten all over again. :-)
In a portrait the eyes are most important and those are handled pretty well in the last one with white that is not off colour. Composition-wise the arm distracts the viewer's attention from the face and eyes and should not be there. Backing up a little would have got more of her head in the shot.

To answer your general question about the harshness of flash, if you raise the ISO by the way and reduce the flash "brightness/exposure" using your camera menu then you will get a less harsh light. It will take some experimentation to get it just right.

By the way in postprocessing it is possible to bring the brown out in her eyes more.

These are very good shots for someone that is just starting to learn.

We can help even more if you give us the data (called exif data) that was used for each shot. Those pieces of information include; The ISO, F-stop or aperture and shutter speed.

I'm especially curious about your data for Shot #2

Read your manual for how to keep the flash off it should not go on UNLESS you want it to. As tegan mentioned. Raise your ISO indoors and you should not need flash.

For shot 2 by raising your ISO and choosing large aperture (small number) you should have been able to achieve good exposure.

    Hope that helps,

    Marko
