November 2010 Photography assignment - Show us where you live

It's time to think of next month.

One idea I had was 'show where you live'. We have people from all over the world and I thought it would be neat to have an assigment for them to show where they live. The idea is open to interpretation but I think it should convey some info to the viewer about what it's like to live in, say, Sri Lanka.

I was going to suggest an iron photographer type of assignment (A combination of three elements). Looks like Marko beat me to it.

I'm all about yellow this month

Maybe a fall theme? The colors should be gorgeous this time of year in the trees and sunsets... Especially up there in Canada with all them maple trees I wish I was back up in Vancouver...

Maybe a Yellow/red/oranage theme?

How about composing a shot with opposing colors of the color wheel. These are just a few ideas I can conjure up after studying... I'm running on mental fumes

actually what i suggested were 3 different choices. We also have a 'level2' photography assignment for harder assignments.

Please remember the theme with the most support becomes the theme so feel free to show support for what was suggested or suggest new possibilities.

The other one I thought of was emotion not necessarily involving people. Portray an emotion or emote a feeling using either live or inanimate objects, or via processing.

I think it might make things less confusing if we do.

I'm open to all ideas but I still think the level 2 should be not just different but a challenge on the first. For instance, if the regular challenge was "time" then the level 2 would be "time - no clocks". This would make the level 2s harder. That lets those of us who are not so great work towards the level 2 but if we don't feel we've achieved it we can enter the regular level 1. Do I make sense?

I'm open to all ideas but I still think the level 2 should be not just different but a challenge on the first. For instance, if the regular challenge was "time" then the level 2 would be "time - no clocks". This would make the level 2s harder. I like this as well. That way the assignments will always be related.

I do not see why they need to be related myself. For instance "time, no clocks" is not much different from "time" as I don't expect that if 'time" were chosen we would see 30 photos of clocks, anyway. Also it could be something a little more advanced, like say an HDR creation or creative edit photo.

Maybe my example was a little overly simplistic, however, the gist of it is that the regular monthly challenge be straightforward so that everyone can participate and have a chance at being successful with it. The level 2 challenge should mean that you have to bring something extra to the table to participate and be successful. Maybe the level 2 requires panning which is a skill not everyone has been able to do well or maybe it's a lighting challenge for those with the right gear to participate. Whatever the level 2 is I would like to see it linked so that one can aim for the level 2 but if you can't quite make it then your effort is not wasted as it will fit into the regular challenge.

Having two separate and distinct challenges like this month, "What's in your scrap?" and "Selective Focus" just gives me two challenges to work on and makes it easier for me to get confused about what I'm doing. The level 2 challenge should make me have to go the extra distance to get the shot or why bother to call it level two?

I really don't see how this month's selective focus is a "level 2" challenge. I take a photo with some things in focus and other things not in focus. Did I do it well? Do I really understand what "selective focus" means? I think the challenge should do more than just give us a topic to shoot but should rather get us to push our boundaries a little bit - not that I'm any good at that

Anywho, that's my

Likin' Bambi's idea of show where you live. It will not only be a challenge of the month, but give others a way to relate to who we are through our surroundings/areas in which we reside. Maybe for the level two you could take something that some may find mundane/normal from your immediate surroundings, and make it artistic through manipulation/Post-processing technique.

IMO this is starting to sound much more complicated and over-thought than it needs to be.
I personally like it the way it is now. I guess I will leave it as when the decision is made as to what route to take just post the topics and I will take part when able.

I prefer it of course when we all can agree on these themes...but when we can't, as Admin I'm prepared to 'make the call' so we can move forward.

I hope members are okay with that.

So the way i calculate it...
The theme "Show us where you live" is the regular assignment and Time, no clocks is the level 2 assignment.

Hi everyone! The suggestion posts have been merged and the theme this month is show us where you live. Of course you can shoot your front door, but you could also shoot other aspects of where you live i.e your community, park, backyard etc. Okay then, who will post first?

We have a lot of apple orchards which are a lot of fun to shoot -
