I've been messing around with ICC color profiles lately in photoshop, and it was driving me crazy too. Some of the colors can't get printed because of the paper you choose. I found it dulls down the highlights, and it's very difficult to edit. I found that if i couldn't get bright enough colors on glossy paper, I'd switch the profile for metallic paper.
