just mount it on your camera and start shooting...

set it to ttl or ttl bl to start...

inside you want to point the flash head toward the ceiling to bounce the light instead of blasting someone away......

later on there are many things you can do with an sb800.... experiment with it off camera... play with the bounce card.... play with the gels etc...

the sb800 manual also includes a how to use guide.. read that for some ideas..

The plus and minus signs are beautiful things.
For ease let's say you're in TTL (through the lens - automatic) mode and you use the flash.

First off, the flash's main goal is usually to light the foreground.

- If you use the flash and the foreground subject is too dark press the plus sign and it gets lighter.

- If you use the flash and the foreground subject is too bright press the minus sign and it gets darker.

This is the same both indoors and outdoors.

The D80s built-in Speedlight has a Commander mode does it not? If that's the case then don't forget to play around with Slave/Commander and off-camera set-ups.

Yes the D80 does have commander mode.. and yes I too suggest getting that flash off the camera.... then the fun begins !
