    Talking Pictures from "on top"

I like to take bizarre photos of food that my wife bakes.

Here is a picture of a pie.

As you can see, one side seems dark. Any advice on how to take better photos?

I think this photo has decent composition, but yes it is too dark.

To learn to take better photographs it is best at the beginning NOT to use flash.

This is because it's next to impossible for a newbie to 'see' how the flash will light the subjet.

So for this example I would have placed the pie near a window and used a simple reflector or anything white to reflect the light on the side of the pie that was furthest from the window.

If you try this you will SEE the difference the reflector will make.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks

    Marko

I agree. Use only natural light. Also use a good SLR camera with a good lens and with a good light meter.

If you are interested in taking shots of food, I would strongly suggest you study the area.

It may for example surprise you to know that all of the food that great food photographers take photos of, is actually not edible. The emphasis is on a mouth-watering LOOK, not whether it is really edible or not. Whip cream for example and several other foods do not photograph well, so substitutes and the use of chemicals as well as gel, varnish, urethane and other substances are used give food the "right" look. Food presentation is also a specialized area that relates to photography as well.

It is definitely an interesting area and all this information and tricks are only a prelude to the photographic methods that are necessary.
