    Default Gimp and Networks

Is anyone here a Gimp user?

I have v2.6 and thought I'd have a good look at it but struck an issue right up.

All my photos are kept on a server over a LAN and I'm damned if I can figure out how to open a photo from that server.

Surely it can't be that Gimp does not read over a LAN! Hoping I'm mising something obvious.

I'm a Gimp user and the file open dialog is kind of different than just about every other piece of software I've ever used but it was originally designed for Unix so maybe there's something there held over from xWindows or something.

My dialog box has a "Places" box though that lets you select any mapped drives (see attached image). Are you running Windows or Mac?

The other thing is that if you have Gimp open you can drag and drop an image onto the application and it will open it too.

Woo hoo ...that got it sorted.

I had them mapped but they'd become unlinked for whatever reason and showed a red X next them. I've always ignored it because they worked anyhow ... normally ... until I tried Gimp.

    Cheers Iggy.

As soon as I put this thread up I knew this question would come.

GIMP is a Free image manipulation program ... in other words ... like Photoshop but doesn't cost you money ... unless you donate to the owners.

Like Photoshop, you add in plugins etc.

I've never used it but have heard from people who do, who says it's really quite good.

I was mostly curious about the filters and plugins for it really. I'm so used to Photoshop that I find everything else rather clumsy. They might not be clumsy, but my familiarity with PS makes them feel that way to me.

There are heaps of demos/examples/tutorials for GIMP, and I like the price There is lag though on features compared to PS.

I don't use it that much as I can do most things I need in lightroom. If I need to get out of lightroom its too hard .

I think having a strong PS background may help you MA. At least you know what you should be able to do or at least what is possible in PS and what terms to search for. I don't :(
