I believe I know what they are but don't use them. I look forward to hearing more on the podcast.

Related but not the same, I frequently use luminosity blend mode with a black and white adjustment layer (particularly with silver efex, but camera raw works as well) for tonal adjustments on colour images. I actually use this more than curves at the moment. If I understand luminosity masking correctly and if you use the for it tonal adjustments the above method can give a lot of the same results (although without the same control). Of course it wont work for other adjustments (localised sharpening etc)

I acknowledge I may be on the wrong track and really look forward to hearing more.
I welcome all critique and comments on any of my photos

This is intermediate stuff though. You need to know the basics of layers and the basics of what a mask can do. You are in for a treat if you are into investing a couple of hours. This is a game-changing way (Razor sharp precision is possible) to process photographs if you've not heard about it.
Works with GIMP (free) as well as Photoshop.
Podcast should go live next Thursday.

Looking forward to it. I do use Gimp and I'm reasonably familiar with masks but I haven't done anything with a luminosity mask.
