I see what you mean about the shallow dof...
I have to agree with the others that it may be just a little too shallow DOF.
That's way to healthy looking for my tastesI need a constant diet of slug food! The DOF is an issue but it got me to thinking what f stop I would have chosen using my Nikon version of this lens and I'm so tired I couldn't get a number so I thought f8&bethere which led me to wonder why I haven't seen any hint of him for a long time. The tired mind also associated immediately "cheese salad" with an episode of Fawlty Towers and John Cleese but when "crockery" appeared in the same sentence (though I'd never really looked), I knew you were from the UK
Keeping aside the mentioned weakness, The second shot works well for me
PS...Maybe you are using the Nikon version of this lens, somehow I thought you and Iggy were Canon guys for some reason

I like this play Richard! I agree though on the DOF and lack of sharpness.
The only other thing i wanted to mention are the edges in shot 1. Toward the middle of the top edge and toward the middle of the left edge, the edge is weak. Burning in those edges will make the image stronger.
