    I didn't think it was that disgusting. And I think it's iron bacteria, though the pictures I've found elsewhere didn't have this much texture.

    The texture is what attracted me. The references I glanced through also explained what looks like an oily sheen often found near by. It's the same (I think) bacteria, and you tell the difference between it and actual oil by poking it with a stick. If it stays broken it's bacteria. The ducks just dive through this stuff and don't seem bothered by it. The things I learn by asking, "What isthat?"
