Default Day 4 - Kings Canyon (warning pic heavy)

Today we visited Kings Canyon, a spectacular canyon in the Watarrka National Park. We climbed the side of the canyon, and walked around the edge for approx 6km. I had trouble choosing just a few images for posting here, but there are heaps more at my Flickr page..

For those that are interested I wore my GPS running watch and recorded the walk. You can look at it here (be sure to change view to aerial)

Very nice set. The cliff with the black marking look like it was done by machines, do you know if that is what happened or is it a natural occurrence? Looks like they removed looks rock on the face but sometimes nature is astounding so just curious.

I believe the cliff face is a natural "joint face", a fracture of the rock that happened some time ago. I understand the rocks were formed some 440 million years ago when it was part of the ocean, which contributes to the layering patterns in the rock. The Lurijta people have inhabited the area for some 20,000 years. Nature does indeed produce some unusual and spectacular features.
