Want a Higher ISO? Expect more Noise.

The boisterous general opinion on Higher ISOs is just that – noisy.

The higher the ISO when taking photographs with your SLR, the more noise it creates. So all of the efforts we make trying to tweak and adjust our cameras for that perfect lighting, counteracts with the clarity of the photograph.

Thus, here is our plea to the camera manufacturers: We have sufficient mega pixels, we certainly don’t need more (Since that is what seems camera manufacturers are giving us nowadays‚¦). Instead why not give us better low light/noise performance?

It should be noted that some photographers, especially fine art photographers, can use noise to their advantage in order to create a certain feel. For the most part though, most photographers hate noise.

Party at the Old Port

Here’s a shot of a huge ship at the old port in old Montreal at night. It was of course the lights and their reflections on the water that made this shot interesting for me. I normally don’t shoot handheld at slower than 1/30th of a second and this shot was taken at 1/15.‚ Exif data F2.8, ‚1/15 at ISO 1600. You can click the image to make it tastier on the eyes.

Even at the end of the day the ‘machine’ keeps working

Now that I’ve resolved to take my camera with me more often, I’m likely to shoot more city scapes…like this one. This is just a small part of the enormous Shell refinery on the eastern part of the island Montreal. It was a quick shot since the light was fading fast. It was shot at ISO 1000 at 1/80 at F.2.8.

Shots like these tend to bother me somewhat. There is a sense of industry here. Things are happening. Machines are working. Machines are polluting.

……and yet the colours and the contrast seem intriguing. What do you think?
