Excellent captures Asnow, I am very jealous. Nice little "hammer handle" he's got there.
So when are you purchasing that lens now that you have fallen in love with it?????

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there!

Very cool shots of an Osprey feeding. Love the light on the eye in the first shot.

Thanks HBG and MA. Yea that 100-400 lens is definitely on my list of must haves. Along with the 70-200 2.8.

Great series, lovely detail. Full open? On 400mm?

It was taken at 400mm, f8, iso 800 , 1/1250. Unfortunately iso 800 is a bit noisey on my Rebel Xsi so I guess a 7D is also on my wish list.

Really awesome captures. I'm getting to enjoy more bird photos and these are very nice. I'm surprised you wouldn't have gone 1/200 at iso 200 to cut back on the noise. 800 on the XSi is a bit noisy. :(

Thanks Iggy. We had a talk by a bird photographer at our camera club meeting. He indicated that for birds in flight to take the pictures at a speed of at least 1/1000 sec. Because of that I chose the speed and the f stop and that resulted in an iso of 800. I realize that for these pictures I could have had a lower speed and thus a lower iso, however I was going back and forth betwen in flight pictures and still pictures and these were all hand held. It was the first time ever using 400 and I was surprised how much movement there is. It is really hard to hold it still. It was enough to get used to the rental 100-400 which I had never used before let alone constantly change the settings. That would have scrambled my brain. At least at my current expertise.
