I saw this today while working in my garden. This is a peony bud. Ants love peonies. These ones can't wait to get at it.

That black and white looks menacing. Like the bud is just waiting for something large enough to be worth opening its gaping maw.

I take it that peonies have very sweet nectar? That seems to bring all sorts of insects to the feast.

hmm it does too doesn't it?

yes very sweet. If you cut them to bring inside you have to dip them in water to get the bugs out. otherwise they'll be crawling across the table.
