    Yes, essentially that's the difference. The technical term for painted ones is pictograph. Hieroglyphs are a pictographic writing system. (I've been trying to nail down some dates for these rocks, and learned all sorts of stuff in the process. But for the dates I'm seeing assertions without data to back it and official dates on registers without supporting reports).

    There are also some pictographs on these rocks, though not as many as the petroglyphs. They tend to be in more sheltered spots on the rocks, so I'd guess that there were more that didn't survive the elements. Sample of some on the Map Rock below.
