    Default Clan Jetties

The Clan Jetties of George Town are the traditional settlement created by Chinese immigrants who share common historical, geographical and lineage origin.

After the construction of the Quay in 1882, the waterfront was developed with short public landing stages or jetties. Settlements grew on these foundations and they were used for the loading and unloading of goods and for the mooring of sampans (boats). Gradually, each jetty became identified and dominated by certain clans and over time more huts sprung up. Due to constant rivalry over access and monopoly of work consignments, relationships between the clans were very antagonistic and often led to bitter fights and disputes. Today there are still six clan jetties along the waterfront.

1 & 2 for me. I prefer the color in 2, that's what sets it apart for me.

Photography is more than just taking a picture and freezing the action, or leaving the shutter open. It is more than orchestrating the image with the stroke of a brush. Its the realization and explanation that reality is an isolated experience in which only a specific individual can comprehend during any given time period. - Your Truly!

I concur with the others, but I like #2 just for the overhead clutter as well as the colour.

Not to be contrary, but I really like the first shot in black and white. Very clear exposure that shows up the shadow areas nicely. The people in the shot make it interesting. I do like the second shot's composition but the details tend to be lost in shadow or bright areas. I probably would have tried selective color on the lanterns, which have a lot of detail in them. Interesting place. I wonder if it ever burned down and was rebuilt.

I think I prefer 1 & 2 in that order. The rest are pretty much illustrative only.

It was a very interesting place. Despite being peak tourist season I saw very few tourists, and it actually felt quite voyeuristic walking along the jetties, as people were in the their homes with doors and windows open to assist with cooling. It was not unusual to see people having meals, watching TV or even in one case shaving as I walked past. The largest jetty had shops, hairdressers etc on stilts. As you can see they have electricity and one jetty had rubbish bins (I guess you call them trash cans) in front of the houses awaiting collection.

If I remember correctly there was more jetty that was lost during a storm at some stage.
