    Default Old Jets

These are from an airshow in 2004 at the Ontario airport. I haven't had as good an access to the planes since. The crowds have gotten large enough that they're roped off now.

First two shots are of a DeHavilland Vampire. The other airplane is a DeHavilland Sea Venom, which was developed from the Vampire. Both aircraft are in flying condition, and to the best of Mike's knowledge are flown occasionally.

3 ex-Soviet fighters on static display at the Ontario Airport.

The Mig 17 was used extensively by North Vietnam during the Vietnam war.

The Mig 21 was used by North Vietnam in the latter part of the Vietnam war. It is believed that in many cases, these aircraft were actually flown by Soviet pilots.

The Mig 23 is a variable sweep wing jet, like the F-111 or the F-14. There is actually one being flown as a civilian aircraft in the United States.

F5D-1 Skylancer. This is a very rare plane, one of only two built. It was a pure research plane. At the time I photographed it, it was a static display. Neil Armstrong flew in this airplane as part of the research for the U. S. Air Force's early 60s space plane the "Dyna Soar".

Great series! I have no idea about planes but I like to look at them.

Some cool Jets there indeed. The 1st, the Vampire is the one that used to scare me when I was a baby apparently. Or so my Mum tells me.

If you're interested, Mike says a good general reference site is Warbird Alley: Privately-owned, vintage, ex-military aircraft

Maybe you thought it was the other kind of vampire?

Good thought ... but no. My parents tell me they used to fly very low over our area and it was the noise that scared me.
