question for canon lense mount

I'm in the market to buy a teleconverter for my canon 1000D. After browsing the E-bay ads there are numerous listings with different mounts ( AE, FD, EF ). My question is which ones will fit? Having the autofucus feature would be good but not essential when price comes in to play.

There are links near the bottom for the FD and EF-S lens mounts as well. I'm pretty sure the AE is from way back in the film days and is very old and not in use any more. You'd need an adapter of some kind which would probably introduce vignetting and such so you'd be better off just sticking with the EF or EF-S.

The previous posters are correct, you will want an EF mount teleconverter for your lens. A couple of things to keep in mind prior to purchase is 1) certain teleconverters will work with only specific lenses, and 2) you will lose stops of light based on the teleconverter you use.

Canon is well known for Canon 1.4x EF Extender II and Canon 2x EF Extender II (though they're releasing new models of both soon). Both have superior optics than the off brand teleconverters, but will only adapt Canon "L" style lenses. If you look at the image of one of these converters, you can see that part of the teleconverter that connects to the lens has a protruding element. This causes it not to work with many consumer grade Canon EF or EF-s style lenses.

Pretty sure that's wrong - they won't work with EF-S lenses (the ones with the white dots where the lens connects to the camera). Any EF lenses (ones with red dots instead) will work fine.

Per Canon's website: "Note: This lens is only compatible with fixed focal length L-series lenses 135mm and over, as well as the EF 70-200/2.8L, EF 70-200/2.8L IS, EF 70-200/4L, and EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L."

If you look at the extender itself, the part that attaches to the lens protrudes and would come in direct contact with most lenses. I've supplied a link for the Mark III version, but it is consistent with the MK II.

IceCreamMan is 100% correct. You would want to use the Kenko or Tamron tc's if using on anything but lenses he has mentioned, or you will damage the lens or tc itself with the Canon versions. They are meant for the higher quality lenses only, as Canon agrees, (as most do), you would not be impressed with pictures taken with a tc attached to lesser lenses.
Out of the two off-brands, from what I have seen personally, the Kenko really shines, and is quite comparable to Canon.
To the OP, KawarthaBob,: Which lenses do you have that you would want to use a tc on? This will give us a good indication on your needs.
