This is my first post here. I like just about any kind of subject matter in photography. I'm a hobbyist/amateur and have been since I was about 11.. that was a looooonnnngg time ago. I appreciate constructive criticism. That's how I learn.

I hope this file is not too large for the rules. I read the FAQ's on file size and it said that the size and file types would be on the upload page but I missed seeing them.

I like your choice of subject matter. If you can do it over, I'd like to see it from farther away with a longer lens and a wider aperture. Right now the background competes too much with the horses. great colors and "action" though. And I like the title.

I too would like to see a shallower depth of field that would seperate the horses enough that the saturated colours make the closest one pop right off the page.

The colours are wonderful and it looks like you've prevented the highlights from getting blown out so it's pretty well exposed. Both Andrew and Wicked Dark make a great point that the background competes with the subject. This could have been handled in camera by Wicked Dark's method. If you don't have the opportunity to go back and shoot it you can play with an editor to do one of two things. Use selective colouring to change the background to black and white or a blur effect to mimic a shallow depth of field.

Thank you all for your time to comment. Your input is a great help. Just what I'm looking for. I'll play around with the two suggestions you made Iguanasan. I'll put it in PS and see what I can do with it there. There is a chance I might be able to try it again. It was taken at a local carnival last year and it comes back every summer so I might be able to give it another shot. I thank you again for your help.

I like the way the back horse is focused and framed under the front (closest) horse. I agree there is a bit of competition with the background colours but that's hard to avoid at a carnival I suspect
I would crop this differently myself. Because the front horse's eye is not in focus I would crop this just under the eye and above the lip of that front horse. This reduces some of the background distraction, and also makes the back horse the real subject of the photo.

I love it, there is something a little disturbing about it and it instantly brought to mind Picasso's Guernica.
Great colours and I like the tight crop on it, I think the fact that most of the background is so vivid adds nicely to the mania of it. Thanks for sharing-more please!
