need help in deciding

there is a portraiture contest coming up, and I would like to know which one of the two images I should submit .. or do the both suck? .... and why is there a stupid drop down thing on "submit"???? I did not put that there ....

I like them both Matt, but prefer the 2nd. Would also consider cropping just tad off the left and bottom

I like the 2nd image - lots of emotional content in that one. Maybe consider cloning out (darkening) the bright background area at the back of his neck? Again, nice shot. Very stirring.

Shot 2 for me as well.
I hear RM's comment about a left crop and I agree, (you cropped off another soldier's nose). I might try a crop to the ear of the soldier in the bkgd.... Or i might darken the whole soldier.
