Dear pixels Friends,

I am still working on composition at the Macro level, understanding that any learning could potentially help my other photography skills.

Your comments are welcome, particularly the one that points out to weakness or sources of improvements. Hopefully, I will get this better and better over time.

Here is one of my last shots. This is a Dictamnus purpureus. A rather rare species that is worth it's place in any garden.

I really like this shot and love the muted palette. Backgrounds are so important in Macro work. My only nit on this shot is the 30% of the background on the left. The colour change is jarring to my eye. I'd likely crop it out if it were my shot. Hope that helps - Marko

I agree with Marko also, maybe even blur the 2 stems that have those tiny bits in focus, so that only the main stem is in focus, I find the other bits that are in focus a distraction. Beauitful colours and focus on that main stem though. love it!

I agree with Chantelle that the "other" in focus bits are distracting.
It is still a nice image, and I especially like the colour and the sharp focus.

hmm i really dig what's in focus here but i'm afraid the rest of the image might be too much for it... however that conflict could be an advantage... it's a tough call.. i guess since i have a problem with the background maybe consider the background more seriously... try and maybe put a bunch of those flowers together... ya know, muddy the shot... those blobs on the stems are really beautiful. also, i'm not sure if it's just the stems themselves or the actual lighting conditions but the way they appear to be lit is from below and also i think that's what really defines the image.

ps you'll prally wanna use a tripod because as i took a second closer look it's slighty distorted. even at fast shutter speeds with macro photography it's best to use a stand still ((in my opinion))

I did use a tripod and artificial lighting in a studio like environment.

I took a dozen shots of this one. You are right, the lighting came from the bottom. I am still trying to improve my setup.

Here is some more in this series that I found interesting for your to comment on, the one originally posted as my preference though. The third one is not that good. We see the light source reflecting in the water drop. How about your own opinions?
