    There are essensially 2 settings on the Gimp Plugin(the only one I've seen available) and that is how much blur(for the soft layer) and layer opacity to blend the 2.     funny that's what I was thinking! wondering if I could figure out how to layer a blurred image over a sharp one.

    Thats what the plugin for Gimp does. If it is the only one I have found for gimp, you should see that in Gimp you have 2 layers. You can then change the opacity to change how much of the bottom layer comes through to the image. But it is applied to the whole layer. Layer masking will alloy to even more control to say bring more of the branches though with more focus than the rest of the image.

    I'm not too familiar with orton, but I have to agree that the colors in this shot are awesome. Also very nicely composed, I really like how the branch runs through the frame.
