First portrait attempt

Here's my take. I'll let you have with both barrels. Great stuff!

Composition on both are excellent. Exposure looks to be about bang on to me though there are those with better eyes than I so look for more comments. Your daughter's right eye looks a little out of focus for some reason but the left seems pretty good. I know I'm going to sound like Marko, he's been influencing me quite a bit I think, but the eyes definitely need to be sharper. You didn't cut off any arms or hands and your daughter's expression seems very natural.

The one with the dog itself is awesome. I love the angle and her expression. Again, you didn't cut off any body parts, etc. exposure looks good though her chest is a tad overexposed.

All in all, this is pretty good stuff. If this is your first attempt at portrait work, I'm jealous!

This truly is my first attempt. I bought a Nikkor 50mm f1.4 lens that very day and borrowed my daughter and puppy for the afternoon.

Looks good to me too. I concur with Iggy's assessment.

In shot 1 I would probably have had more floor (lots of cool character in that floor) and way less wall (bland and the bright spot is bit off putting).

I think both would look better if they were levelled up though instead of sloping to the left like that.

For a first attempt ... these are excellent!!

Both are well done! Iggy of course IS indeed seeing this through my eyes and the eyes in shot one need to be sharper. I'd also crop a wee bit off the top.

Unfortunately my daughter and my older daughter's home studio is in Alberta so.....I am back to shooting the moss of the West Coast
