Default uv filters - normal vs. multi coating

I have to replace my b&w uv filter as the glass cracked when my camera fell, hitting the ground, getting out of a taxi. No damage to my Canon 17-40 mm lens or camera. What advantage is there in getting the multi-coated filter vs. the normal when the prime purpose is to protect the front of my lens? Multi-coated is double the price.

B+W MRC = water resistant + dirt repelling + scratch resistance + better reflection reducing

i guess thats what you would want to protect your lens
