    Default Flickr questions please

    Hi members!

I'm a casual flickr user ( Flickr: Photography.ca - Marko Kulik's Photostream ) and i have a couple of basic questions that i hope you can help with.

1 - Is there a way to categorize contacts into any other groups besides friends or family? (Ie landscape photographers - portrait photographers etc.) I USED to be able to do this but unless I'm mistaken this option has been stupidly removed. Is this correct?

2 - Similar to 1, Is there a way to categorize All rights reserved photos from Creative commons photos FROM MY CONTACTS?

    many thanks!

from some googling i found this script that does indeed work with Firefox and Greasemonkey.

Flickr: Discussing GM Script: Flickr Contacts Organiser - Tag your contacts - Script Updated 24th Mar 2011 in Flickr Hacks

It answers part 1 of my question. Thx!

Wish I could help you but like you I am a casual user and only use it to host photos for this forum as it seems to be the best for posting photos.

I'm a fairly heavy user and I'm not familiar with any built in functionality that lets you do that. My other beef with the site is that it's very tricky to keep on top of group discussions. I wish Flickr was innovating or I wish I could convince all my Flickr contacts to move to a spot where these features work better but I'm having trouble finding any place better.

One thing Flickr does very well is navigation. If I'm looking at an image I can click the name of the group and with the left and right arrows browse through the images in that group or click on the name of the individual and then browse back and forth within that photographer's collection. That's my favourite feature.

I'm getting really tired of what can't be done on Flickr as it evolves. It seems to me it's becoming a heavy piece of bloatware. I'm a heavyish user of the site as I quite often use it as an idea bank for inspiration into the future hopes and aspirations of my own work by carousing the work of others....But it's getting downright tedious!

I have to agree with MAW here...they aren't evolving in the least and what is good (i used Piknik alot to put borders and watermarks on images) they don;t have anymore. IMO they just seem to be resting on their laurels of popularity....sort of like Blackberry smartphones did...

I do find displaying my pictures is a problem. Flickr, Facebook, minus.com, U-tube, and vimeo.com I seem to have tried so many. Some times it is a surprise to find ones own pictures found a AV on U-tube which I had made and up-loaded on to minus how it migrated to U-tube I have not a clue.

My main picture taking at the moment is in a private woodland and one of the problems is I want to compare images. Overview – Close-up. Spring – Autumn (Fall) or before – after always seem to want at least two images shown together.

So I set to designing my own website. Once I started it seemed to grow and I have been a heavy user of both java script and CSS in the main just looking what others have done and modifying to suit my needs. Now moved to doing the official website at Free the Forest Home Page which went live last week.

But I am sure like with many more photographers what I want is for Google to find my site and list it. And with this in mind I often put in words into Google to see how it is working. Surprising Flickr in spite of it’s huge size seems to do very well. I have also realised that Google can do site searches for example enter [site:Free the Forest Home Page Eric] and it will look on the site I built for anything with the name Eric. The same must apply to other sites however likely you will need to go to http://www.flickr.com/profile_url.gne and select an address for it to work.

I wonder how many build their own website? My ISP gave me Eric's Web Page which has just 12 meg of space so I also started Eric Palmer's Home Page which has a lot more space but again it’s the Google thing again. Not a clue why but Google will find things on the talktalk site far faster than on the freeiz site. Not a clue as to why. Both sites include the sitemap.xml and have similar content yet Google will find things on talktalk faster. And the commercial site Free the Forest Home Page seems to beat the lot as far a Google goes.

Do a Google search for Coed Nant Gain and click images and most are mine yet I rarely change the name so most are just called something like IMGP1234.jpg so how Google identifies them as to do with Coed Nant Gain I have not got a clue.
