Canon or Nikon?

Hello all,

I am thinking of buying my first D-SLR and have been reading review after review. I have narrowed it down to the following:

Nikon D40x
Canon Rebel XTi

They both come with a kit lense

Do you have any recommendations as to why i should lean toward one or the other?

Or maybe a different suggestions completely. Based on personal experience?

I don't want to pay more than 1000$ CDN.

I'm going to go to college in photography and only have a Canon SD450 which isn't getting me very far...

In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with either. One thing I would suggest is that you pass on the kit lenses and get yourself a superior 3rd party lens for less, or get a REALLY good lens for about the same price or a little more than the kit lens.

Example, for a D40 (or D40X), get the Sigma 18-50 DC EX HSM Macro F/2.8. This lens alone is $330US shipped from Amazon and will be an excellent all around lens. Its sharper than Nikon's 17-55 F/2.8 lens that goes for just under $1400.

Obviously, I have a preference for Nikon, but thats just a personal opinion.

Why don't you go to someplace that sells both and try out both cameras and see how they feel? Ergonomics is sometimes a deal breaker.

A D40x with a good person behind the camera should be able to easily duplicate the quality and result levels in these pictures.

That's excellent advice JerryH!

That's also EXACTLY what I did - compare. In my case I compared the Nikon d80 against the 30d by Canon. BOTH are great cameras. But for ME the lower noise of the cannon 30d at high iso was the deal breaker so i returned the Nikon because i was not happy with the noise. (FYI for me the noise level on the Nikon was fine till about 800).

Now even though I went with the 30d - I can easily say that I prefered the nikon camera's autofocus system..and it had multiple exposure which i like and the canon doesn't have it. So someone that's really into amazing autofocus might favour the Nikon.

It's always tough to say what's the best...there is no best.
It's only about what's best for you.

You know for a $1000cdn, you could almost get a Nikon D80 with it's kit lens. And if you are going to photography school the D80 has a depth of field preview (that the D40X does not have) that you would probably end up using quite a bit in school. Another problem with the D40X is that is does not support the older AF-S lens and many 3rd party less expensive lens when it comes to auto-focus. One feature I like on the Nikon line that I don't believe Canon have is the auto ISO feature in which you can set the Max ISO and the min shutter speed.

I love my Rebel XTi but the kit lens will only get you so far. I also have (along with the 18-55) a 75-300 (need image stabilization though), a 28-105 and a 50 fixed 1.8. I'm really in need of a macro lens though.

Hi everyone,

Since the digital era started, Canon has always been more developed than any other brand. Canon is always a step higher than its competitors. The only negative aspect is the high prices of its lenses and cameras...

However, Nikon cameras are also really convenient and functional cameras...the outcome is also great. It depends what will you use the camera for; as a hobby, for your job,etc.

By the way, now it´s time to take a look at the camera Canon D5. It price will go down dramatically.
