Visual Challenge

Related to some of the discussion on this board, I have noticed elements in photos that others have not seen or not noticed. This is simply a difference in experience and even that is a generalization because my daughter is better at it than I am and her background is in art.

So, I have a challenge for everyone. Popular Photography May 2008 edition, if you don't buy it, check it out in the store..specifically "Flash made Easy" and the photograph that covers page 68 and page 69.

What seems drastically wrong with that photo...visually?

These are the things I noticed (i'm not sure if i'm right) but here goes:

1. Looks like the subject is jumping against a backdrop as shadows are noticable on pants

2. Maybe some vignetting on lower left corner

3. Some lowlights are clipped in the background resulting in lost detail

4. Looks like maybe some highlight clipping in the face and hand

5. The background looks really grainy... but i am viewing this online with an old dell laptop...

I dunno... what r u getting at?

Too bad it's not online....but I'll keep my eye open for it nest time at at a magazine shop......I LOVE these kinds of things!

I thought so to Marco but Travis mentioned he was viewing it online so I was hoping for a link. I buy all my books and mags online so I am rarely ever in a store that would carry that magazine. If I don't get a link I will have to go find a copy now, my curiosity has gotten the better of me on this one.

yea.. i googled it a downloaded from somewhere.... the place i downloaded gave me the whole magazine in adobe format for free (as a trial, one per customer)...

i'm not sure where... but i found it pretty easy...

Tegan... I actually didn't read the article just looked at the picture..(it's on my laptop)... but I can tell you it's the kinda trickery picture that pisses me off...I'll read it and see if i can get the point your trying to make...

I would post the picture to the forum but I don't know if this falls into the educational portion....

You have the right idea anyway. The article suggests that the method is to adjust your camera for the scene manually, put the flash on, and then jump in front of the camera.

If that is what the photographer did, then it would seem impossible for there to be a shadow behind the foot and the leg "on" the sky. If the shot was faked, then the whole article is a fake.

It also says something negative about the editing staff who should have caught the problem with the photo.
