Thx for the FB group Iggy! :highfive:
Can we set aside a time to meet online to discuss the project?
Both Iggy and I can do Noon (plus or minus) this Wednesday? Can other people that are still interested chime in if they can make it?
Thx! - Marko
I can't do noon- I'm in Toronto this week for a conference. but I am good for whatever people decide.
It's about everyone...but we need to meet if this is going to work so we should all agree on a time together no?
That's why I'm suggesting we use this thread to organize a time for all to meet.
If next week is good for you bambi can we meet Monday evening? I'll make myself available.
Iggy - you okay to meet Monday eve?
FYI - I'm on the hosting thing, should be connected with a homepage very shortly.
thx! - Marko
I will go along with and support whatever you guys decide. My work schedule makes it difficult to attend these things but if you have flyers to distribute etc. I can hand those out. Participate on the Facebook thing, etc.
BTW, Iggy your link to a flickr group on the facebook group is not working. :(
Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday I can do. Monday and Thursday are karate nights and Saturday is reserved for socializing.
What would be the agenda? I'm all for a phone chat or some such but I've found that it's pretty hard to get everyone together. What do we need?
How are the logos coming, kat?
Cool stuff! Be nice to see more joining to lend support. :)
So is the flickr for anyone to to post public photos to? Can we promote it? There are a lot of photographers in Calgary that do a lot of public photography that we could invite. I am sure that goes for your area or anyone's as well. It would be a rather dull group if there was only the photos for that one occasion in there.
The Facebook group seems to be getting photos from everyone already so, sure, why not? I'm easy. We will try to curate the group though and keep it to public photos to fit the theme.
I'll have to look at the settings to see about making sure these other options are open. I assume I can share management of the Flickr/Facebook groups. Any takers to help with that?
Ok Publicphotography.org is live but it's only a placeholder for the moment.
What we could also use help with is a blog setup... does anyone have experience with that? setting up and customizing blogs is not my forte at all.
I can definitely maintain it once it's up though.
I suggest running this through a blog because it makes it so much more interactive - but I'm open to all ideas on this one.
Blog is an excellent idea, however, I've only ever used Blogger. I'm sure I could figure it out given a bit of time unless someone else already knows. Does your hosting company have an admin page where you select a blog engine or some such or do we need to find a blogging tool to install?
No any blog install would need to be done manually - it's really not that hard...it's been at least 3 years since I've done it though and I've only done it once...and i'm crap at the customization...that I've never really done.
for anyone that's done this before, the install should take about 15min. For those that need to learn as they go (like me...probably 60-90 min)
customization - probably 1-2 hours.
does anyone know anyone with basic wordpress skills that might want to help out just on the setup/customization?
Thx!
Marko
If nobody can offer help on the above task, I'll try to install it (wordpress 3.0) myself on Monday.
If anybody knows people that could help on the technical side of blog customization that would be great.
I'll help if i can...Quote:

again i suggest a meeting online for those willing to help....please state your availability.
At this point I'm just trying to get the thing live, but if nobody else steps up with concrete plans to make this happen...or offer a time when we can all meet to focus the project...then this puppy will fail.
I'd say we need 4 or 5 of us online at the same time next week........or i too am simply out.
I'll make myself available at anytime we agree on...but i want people posting when they can meet online. Name a date and time please.
thx!
Marko
Tuesday or Wednesday evening:
7:00pm Atlantic through to 11:00pm Atlantic. Just let me know in advance.
I only know enough code basically, to make a hyperlink, so would not be any use on the website. I work splits every day so am not around when most people are as a general rule but I can promote the sites, add links etc. If everyone invited their friends to the facebook photography.org the site would grow in membership. Every time someone posts to it it shows up on the news feed of the members which puts it front and center in people's minds. So if you invite 10 friends and they invite 10 friends and so on and so on.....
I can meet at 7pm Atlantic time tuesday. If it's only a few of us I can do a conference call at my expense.
Publicphotography.org is now a live blog running on wordpress 3.0
Still looking for any helpers on customization...
many thx
Marko
Looks good so far, Marko.
Thanks - yup that's the basic install part - took me 30-40 min.
I just tried to customize the header and came up with a permissions error...hence the request for simple customization help. I certainly know people I can pay for this....but i'd rather not have to pay..
many thx - M
sure - I'll send them by email
thx! - M
Okay I fixed that header image :highfive:
Just as an FYI - in order to get the original image attached image as the header the graphic should be on the left and the wording on the right imo.
This means it needs to be resized and repositioned. It should be cake from the original file which i do not have. The exact dimensions of that file should be 940px × 198px
Kat any chance you could resize that file for us - if not, if you email me the file, I should be able to do it.
There was also Iggy's file which i also like VERY much - not sure which one is better....
we can use either file as the header/logo so long as it's properly resized from the original file.
This is why a meeting online (or opinions posted here) as to the purpose of the publicphotography.org is important. I think the direction should be clear to any viewer. Although i like Kat's logo a lot, Iggy's logo repeats the name of the site which may be less confusing (not sure)
anyway - like some opinions here!
Thx!!

Not pushing mine too much as I think mine sucks from a quality perspective, however, I would prefer not to use the Photography is Not a Crime one as I would feel like I am stealing from Carlos Miller's site, Photography Is Not A Crime
Iggy makes a good point...another site is using that catchphrase...
If your going to do a logo you need to use the name you picked out as the main feature. Then you can add a tag line but Public Photography should be the main words. A tag line should be something like Photography is a Right or along those lines simple and to the point and incorporates all rights of photographers. Just an idea. I will weigh in still and if you need a hand in Toronto I will help to get it going here but I will be minimally involved. I also think the person with the camera is way to busy but these are just my thoughts. You should consider something a bit more plain and easy to reproduce and looks good from something as small as a button to a poster. If it is too busy you will limit it to what you can use it on. Simple is best. Just an opinion.
I am glad to hear that you are 'in', in some capacity A.L. :)
many thx - Marko
Sorry guys, crazy busy here. Lots of things have happened in my life and just getting it all together.
Marko, not to sure what you want me to re size?
Pete did this up just now. What you guys think?
I just used the Photography Is Not A Crime logo because our name had not been established at the time. I like Kat's number 2 choice. It will show up on a white or black bg.
You probably already know this but here is a link to Wordpress Themes and hacks:

#2 works for me too. Public Photography in the cross hairs. I'll add in tonight if everyone is amenable (or no one complains ;) ).
As I said to Marko in a PM, right now my life is pretty chaotic with finishing a very important fulltime school practicum, (with a bit of a huge learning curve) and then also working part time as well. so not only do I not have a lot of time for photos, I do not have a lot of time for much else for at least the next 2 weeks. :o
I am committed to doing extremely well on this practicum so I can have a better chance at finding employment once it is done so all my time, energy and priorities are focused there for the next few weeks.
Sorry guys that's how it has to be right now. I will catch up and jump back into this in a couple weeks when life slows down a bit for me. :)
Feel free to use this on the website if you like...or change it up if you want to as well. I wrote it a while back. It gives an idea of what I think we are about.

A Celebration Focusing on the Rights of Photographers
An idea is in the works by a few people. What we are hoping to accomplish is a peaceful mass photo get together from Coast to Coast City to City Town to Town across Canada to bring attention and awareness to the fact that public photography is not a crime and photographers are not criminals. We are merely people with a pastime, a hobby or a job and photography is the means in which we express ourselves. We are guaranteed that right to do so in Canada because it is clearly outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Section 2.b) of the Charter states we as both Canadians and photographers are allowed:
“Freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;”
This statement absolutely guarantees our right to express ourselves through photography, and the freedom to publish our photos. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees our right to take photographs in public. That's right; we can take photos of anything in public and under regular circumstances, as long as no laws are broken while photographing. It is not against the law.
Oh and I love Kat/Pete's #2 version. :)
I like what you have written casil and we'll incorporate it into the blog.
I too like Kat's #2 design (Thanks Pete )
In terms of making it the standard header size to fit in the blog though it needs to be exactly 940px × 198px I tried to do this with photoshop and it didn't work out. I'm guessing the file was done in illustrator... any chance you could resize #2 for us to exactly 940 x 198 pixels?
many thx!
Marko
Are the colors fine? would you like a couple more done up with out the cross hairs..diferent design I guess? I'll pass the resize to him.
Personally, i really want to limit the work Pete is doing for us. If he's the creative type and wants to try more designs or small embellishments because he loves to play...he can of course, but frankly, i think we may just have it..He's VERY talented to have come up with these 3 designs so quickly.
But it seems several members including myself are perfectly happy with design #2 - The colours are strong, it's very readable...it just works imo. Only the resize is necessary and that might take a wee bit of fiddling...so if he's able to do that for us - Yahoo!
Thx kat!
Marko
No problem! I'll get him to do it when he gets home from work. He has it saved in different formats (for printing purposes I think) so whatever you need from it just shout out! He doesn't mind. Anything to get him doing something :)
It might also be a good idea to post a few resource links to sites such as this one:

Both Marko and I will be away from our respective home towns on the 4th Saturday in September so we decided, committee of two, to move it to the Second Saturday in September (SSS) which this year is September 11th, 2010.
We both believe that we should have more than enough time to promote via the web and so that should be more than enough time.
Unless there are strong objections to this date we'll lock it in for this date.
Pete did a banner. Hopefully it's what you are looking for.
