I bought a D7000 with the 18-105 kit lens and a 50mm 1.8. Originally I had bought a Canon G12 to work with for a year or so. I was quite impressed with it's quality, but ultimately I felt that it would have become relegated far sooner than I had anticipated.
Astronomy is my primary hobby and I will likely, at some point in the future, use the Nikon for DSO photography.. although astrophotography was not my primary reason for buying the camera, or even a serious consideration. My current telescope, although beefy at 14" in diameter and 5' in length, is absolutely not of a type that is useful for astrophotography. In the meantime, I'm having a blast learning to compose shots and about the camera itself.
