I have joined but after 4+ years I still don't know why...

LOL, it is more for business and professional contacts, I have already met someone who works for a small publisher so it may have it uses. I have found Google+ more of a Why the Linkedin so far and only been on Linkedin a few days. It is not a social network as in Facebook or Google plus but as I mentioned more for the networking and business end of social networks.

    From their site:

    What is LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network with over 120 million members and growing rapidly. LinkedIn connects you to your trusted contacts and helps you exchange knowledge, ideas, and opportunities with a broader network of professionals

I've only looked seriously at Linkedin in two cities so I'm by no means an authority and my comments are an opinion only. From what I've seen the value of Linkedin is entirely dependent upon what groups you want to network with and how active that group is in your particular community. Judging from what I saw, if employment in the "trade" is good and there are lots of opportunities for work then the membership at Linkedin is not very active. If employment is low and there is an excess of talent around then the activity is higher due to the number of interested parties who are not working and are pushing the networking functions in hope of getting the contacts and a job. That's exactly what this site is for though, networking of like professionals. I think you'll have to look at your own particular interests in your geographical area, take a look at what they are doing, maybe get involved in a few functions then judge for yourself whether continued association would be of benefit. I recall seeing some statistics that indicate a very high percentage of management level jobs were filled through contacts rather than resumes so it certainly wouldn't hurt to cover your bases.

I joined as I was getting many requests from entertainment lawyers, band managers, some modelling agencies, gallery owners, art reps, etc. to add me. SO I am giving it a try just to see what it is like. I have no expectations so it will not be hard to meet them lol, but if something does come from it great. If it was not for all the invites I would probably never given it a second look but seems to be popular in Toronto anyway for the Art crowd. After 2 years of being stagnate professionally I adjust seeing if it is a worthwhile avenue to explore, nothing to lose.
