Making Bird Feeders

Well, MA has inspired me to make bird feeders in my own backyard. Problem is though, I'm not quite sure how to go about it. There is a tall wooden pole (see picture below)in our backyard (left by the previous owners) and for the past 5 years, it's just been sitting here. So, I thought I'd turn it into a bird feeder. I was thinking for something really simple, I could just nail a flat piece of wood to the top and then, nail a wooden container (an open box) on top of that. Thoughts? (Pictures taken in Auto )

Some concerns: a lot of people in the neighbourhood let their cats roam around outside during summer. I'm kinda worried that the fence closest to the post (to the right) will become home to the cats, and thus, scaring off the birds. Any thoughts as how to rectify that problem?
