    I can only assume you pedal with your foot central over the pedal. The ball of your foot should be over the pedal axle so you get maximum power transfer.

    Proper cycling shoes also require proper cycling pedals. But a correct pedalling shouldn't require special shoes. Harder sole shoes are an advantage though.

    I just got a new set of heavier pedals...not clip ins, just a bit wider...clip ins scare me as I'm just too much of a clutz to even try to unclip in an emergency!
    I think the pedalling style had much to do with my choice of footwear this summer.
    Can I by stiffer bike shoes that aren't clip ins?

    Shimano does a shoe in their cheaper range that is sold for cycling but also to be able to walk comfortably in (as comfortable as you can in cycling shoes anyhow)... they might be worth a look.
