Angry computer help please (aka, I hate vista!)

    okay here is my dilemma:
my computer was asleep and when I woke it up all I had was the task bar at the bottom and my desktop picture. No icons nothing.

I had to do a hard shut down, same thing.
hard shut down again, this time in safe mode-all there.

reboot in 'normal' task bar at bottom, can open with mouse but nothing shows up on desktop.

now in safe mode running a malware scan.

argh. If this doesn't work I will do a system restore.

    what the heck is this?
We need to get my laptop sorted guys or else the money I had designated for a camera purchase will go to a laptop purchase

typing on hubby's laptop for now.

iMacs are not much more than a decent PC if at all and take up much less space. If you want a 17" Mac Book Pro, whole other story in the price area. Since going to Mac's in my entire house I have yet to fix or deal with any issues not even a single crash, they just work and these days I expect at least that from a computer.

I've actually switched back from a mac to a normal PC. First of all, that stuff is really way to expensive. For the money a mac costs, I can get a PC that's twice as fast, even with Windows. I can upgrade whatever part I want, it'll work with any software I please and with NOD32 virusses are really no problem at all.

Just get rid of Vista. I'm running Windows 7 now, and that works fine. And I get to dual boot it with Linux (which is basically just like Mac OS but free) or even BSD.

It's just that a PC requires you to know what you're doing, otherwise you'll f*ck it up. A mac is more foolproof. I just don't like foolproof...
Listen, three eyes, don't you try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.

I've used Mac at home for just over 2 years and love it. I had to use PC at work before I retired last March and it was so frustrating and was always dealing with our IT Department. I agree that there is limited software for the Mac but it's all about organization, storage and editing of photo's for me and there are some great software out there that fit my needs. Oh, and I can't forget about my music in iTunes that sounds great pumped out through my stereo from my Mac and the sync to my iPhone. Emails a breeze and the Safari browser is great. Mac all the way.

I believe quite a few people went over to MAC following the release of Vista and I remember at that time being in the market for a PC upgrade. I considered MAC but in the end went with a new PC costing two grand. I hand picked the pieces and parts because I need my machine to be strong and capable in all areas of multimedia. My latest box does video editing, audio creation with optical output for home theater if needed, plays and burns Blu ray and on and on. It never crashes or quits or brings up any dialogue box I don't expect it to. In my line of work, I can't afford to have anything but that MAC stability and PC's are perfectly capable of delivering that, but one has to know a bit about the way the machine works to get it perfectly balanced sometimes. Macs come from the plant all balanced, just turn them on and go! I just get frustrated at the bad rap people hang on the PC when I've spent the last ten years on five different PC's (I upgrade every two years roughly) with very little trouble. Vista had some snags that eventually drove me back to XP where I've been for the past year or two. I used win 2000 before that with so few issues I totally ignored the XP release. I won't upgrade to win 7 for years yet because for me win XP works flawlessly. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Macs are cool but I'll work alongside any Mac in the fleet doing exactly the same work, with the same results, at the same speed....Anyday!

Reminds me of an old trick I used to like to play.
1/ Take a screen capture of the desktop.
2/ Set this as the background for the desk top.
3/ Take all the icons and move them into a folder.
4/ Set the task bar to auto hide and then drag it to the top of the screen.

It's always best played on someone who just got back from vacation.
