Another slammer today, just now 7.8 hits Indonesia. It occurred to me just now that roughly the same time the LHC went back into service in Jan, we've had quite a few major quakes around the world and many of them in the 7's. Complete random observation and wild speculation from me as I have no idea how the LHC and recent quakes could be connected but the time frame sort of tweaked my interest You know me, a Terrier pup digging up the local golf course looking for the buried Borg bone

PS...Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying there's any connection, the time frame just stood out for me. I've been loosely tracking earthquakes for the past four years as a curiosity as well as an attempt to see patterns. I use this site to keep me updated LINK Two days ago there were 180 some odd quakes on the map and today there are almost 900.

Ok...Bambi....where did we put those tin foil hats?
I'm sorry MAW...I just can't go there with you on this one..... Way too far out there for me.
Have fun on your journey digging though.

I dug already and it makes as much sense as flying to Europe on a house brick
But what does seem to correlate is solar storm activity. Don't worry it's always been my nature to try and relate patterns, some people do crosswords. One can also relate the incredible speed of the media today to the seeming increase in activity. I was probably a little post happy when I tried to relate LHC to recent TP activity

I was wondering if you had a typo with the LHC and if you really meant THC!

I don't believe the LHC had anything to do with it but it does seem to me that there have been an awful lot of quakes this year so far. Big 'uns too! Crazy stuff!

one pattern I can see is related to solar cycles back through time. The other is related to loss of life and destruction of man made stuff. It seems that if you have a few that happen in populated areas with poor building codes and general crowding of humans as in Haiti and perhaps chili then media can run with the ball and our attention gets a bit more fixated on the idea that big quakes are rare which they aren't. I'm still looking but what I'm seeing is that we are having biggies closer to populated areas which may help create the buzz. If all the recent big quakes had happened in no mans land, how much attention would be focused on them? That is what I've managed to put together in the last few hours of dabbling with it.

I have been trying to understand more about the LHC and its workings and purpose since I found out about it. The theoretical physics part is way, way, way too complicated for me to understand. But what I can understand is that they are trying to pull apart particles to understand how matter works, where it comes from, how much there is, what it's made of and so on. So at some level the experiments in colliding particles at record energies are reaching into areas unexplored before. They are colliding particles together at energies approaching the speed of light in a near absolute zero vacuum. The phenomenon that they are attempting to understand include mass, gravity and light. All the forces that hold the universe together. I think your question is a good one, myself: why wouldn't this machine cause unforeseen disturbances in our planet? While they say they are controlled experiments and they are only replicating what happens at random on a constant basis in the universe, I'm not so sure they know what they are doing. Otherwise why do it? The whole point of the machine is to go where no one has gone before.
I can go on. But I'm fascinated by your theory. Perhaps it will grow into a rumor. You probably aren't the only one wondering about this "coincidence".

I find this presumptuous on their part perhaps, Because the knowledge base so far may not be able to understand the natural patterns we observe, to assume random would be a mistake. If you throw an Indian rubber ball into a large cement room with a complete understanding of all the variables that placed it there (and of course the variables here are mind boggling!), you could, with accuracy plot its path. Without this knowledge, you'd assume the erratic bouncing was random event. From what I can tell, the discovery of the Boson Higgs particle will be a significant milestone in understanding the nature of reality. I want the LHC to succeed, what we' discover and how we proceed with that info gives me concern. I recognized a potential pattern in event timing namely that of the LHC and recent earthquakes that upon some digging seems unlikely but then again we're also dealing with that "Random" bit

This does make one wonder. I observed a tv show a few years back where the "news" stated that there are far more earthquakes, typhoons, hurricanes etc then there were in the preceeding 20 years. Some were saying that it was affected by global warming and all its attributes some were saying what you state. And then the one person stated that the media was everywhere now globally, With it's up to the second reporting (CNN?) and that we are just being bombarded with more info on storms and quakes around the world. In my opinion I think its a mix of everything plus our scientific evolution.
