Default Special Olympics Ontario Winter Games

A couple of weekends ago the Special Olympics Winter Games were held here.
Some of the events were postponed for a day due to the cold (-34C one morning) but I was able to get out for while one afternoon and get a few photos of the skiing and snowshoe events. These are a few pics from the skiing. It was a little difficult to get in for some good action shots as nobody was allowed down the course. All these were taken from behind the the start line trying to find a view through the organisers and support staff. I have to say these athletes were very good and very serious about their endeavours.
As for me I found out I really need some practice in shooting in the snow. I ended up with a pile of shots with blown out snow! Some of the PP on a couple of these was done by a fellow photographer. I need some practice at that too!!

it's a great set. Shooting in snow is HARD! I often set the camera to auto bracket so that I can ensure I have a workable shot.

    Thanks JAS/Bambi.
Bambi...I had not even thought about using AEB when shooting the snow. I do it all the time when shooting a sunrise/sunset but just never occured to me in the snow.
    I will definitely try that!!

Cool set. I like "event" shots. Marko has a podcast on shooting in the snow - Photography Podcast #12 – Snow photography | Photography podcast blog and forum - Photography.ca

I find the biggest issue arises if it's a mix of sun and cloud as it gets very dark when the cloud cover drifts in and very bright when the sun shines on the snow which means you have to adjust quickly and by quite a few stops some times. As long as it's consistent light then take a reading off the snow and use it as a guide.
