Ice Racing - Minden

This is a discussion on Ice Racing - Minden within the People photography (portraits, sports etc.) forums, part of the Show your photo (Color) - Landscape & Nature (flowers, mountains, storms etc.) category; This is my first attempt at taking pictures of ice racing. I'm reasonably pleased with them...

Nice set asnow! Lots of great action in these. My faves are the last shot in set 1 and the 3rd in set 2. Nice timing on that guy hitting the bank. I have been trying to get one of those forever and managed to miss every time.

Thanks Aub. On the guy hitting the bank .... I'd love to say it was perfect planning, however it was just luck. I just happened to have the camera pointed in that direction and when I caught a bit of snow flying in the corner of my eye, I just hit the burst mode.

Thanks mate. I'm really liking that burst mode in the 7D. I'm planning on trying some sports photography this year. Problem is most sports photographers use a long lens like bird photographers. Their favourte seems to be a 400mm f2.8. I rented the 70-300 for these ice racing pictures. Oh well, I will have to keep renting until I can afford to buy a lens.

That's a very cool set of images, asnow. A couple of my favs are the third shot from the first post (three cars) and the last shot from the last post (#87 in the corner). Very nice work.

    Thanks Iggy and Bambi.

Iggy - I think you picked my favourites as well. I also kind of like the last one in the first post where you see the cars in varying degrees of drift in the corner. If it was the same car it would be like a multiple exposure time lapse as he went around the corner.

Bambi - I thought the same thing "just a typical commute in Canada..", however most commuters can't handle their cars as well as these guys in the ice and snow (including myself) and would probably end up in a 10 car pileup.
