Photographing the peloton -ICM

Today I went out to get a few shots from the "tour down under" cycling race. It is hard work for the riders, having to ride for 2 hours in 40 C heat in the blistering sun.

I find I am using slow shutter speeds and camera movement more and more for sports these days.

Feel free to comment on any aspect.

Thats a great ICM shot but there is something off just a tad (IMO). Either its a little over exposed, the lights needs to be dropped a smidge, or the darks need to be darkened a smidge

Thanks for the feedback AT, I appreciate it.

I did deliberately try to keep it "high key" and perhaps I have blown out the whites with the longer shutter speed. I will have another play tonight taking your comments into consideration.

Slow exposure panning with a wide angle lens can be a lot of fun (but challenging). These guys were only a couple of yards away from me, travelling at approx 50 kmh. Shadows were a bit of any issue, but I kinda liked the clearest rider coming out of the shadows into the sun in this one

shot 3 is the strongest shot here for me.

ICM's are cool and I've been playing for a while....generally though my biggest comment for all ICM is on composition.
IMO - The composition should be as strong or stronger than the effect. If the composition gets lost in the effect, then there was no reason for the ICM.

I hear you and agree. That is actually why I gave the first photo priority as I thought it told a bit more of a story.

I will try to do better with the composition next time .

I really like this. I just posted about how I've been playing around with multiple exposure in the street and one of the things I've found is that It's easier to get your comp with a tele photo zoom. You might try it and compare.

I will do that. Thanks for the tip. The last shot was using a telephoto zoom shooting the other side of the road

This was a day of experiments, as I didn't want the same old boring shots of cycling. With limited opportunities to change backgrounds, there wasnt a whole lot I could think to do to get something different than everyone else was getting on their cellphones
