Photographers often need tape to secure stuff.
Duct tape and masking tape SUCK for photography.
Gaffers tape (Easy to rip with fingers, very very strong, leaves no residue when you remove the tape) is the BEST tape for photographers. period.
But carrying a full roll of the stuff can get unwieldy on outdoor shoots. (For indoor shoots I always have the full roll though)
Solution for outdoor shoots - Just wrap about 5-6 feet of it around a business card. It stays fairly flat in the photo bag.
Strobist has a good tip on creating a key fob with gaffers tape - But I hate extra crap dangling from a key chain.
