    I tried using a welding lens in the very same fashion for IR back in '09. How that work out? Not too good. A good welding lens will block %100 of UV and infrared. But, if you use them for Long Exposure alone, they work.(B&W only, or you'll have a green photo) A cheap 10 stop ND filter for 52mm-68mm would set you back maybe $30 and with minimal color correction, you can have color shots as well.
