Default Software: PS or GIMP or...

Since joining this forum a little while ago, my interest in post processing has dramatically risen as I see the stunning work/enhancements or simply presentation done by other photographers.

I'd like to get opinions on whether I need to (or should) go out and buy Photoshop or is GIMP perfectly sufficient.

My thoughts are the GIMP is probably sufficient, however, there are MANY more tutorials/tips etc on PS than GIMP to help me learn and develop, and I have a lot of learning and developing to do.

    Is there another alternative?

    thanks in anticipation.

Default Thanks for the link TT!

I'll be checking that site out. I can't stand the thought of paying $800 for PS and I am completely opposed to stealing it. I have been using GIMP for a while for a few things here and there but really haven't spent a lot of time on it mostly because I had trouble finding decent tutorials.

The GIMP is an outstanding app, and you can't beat the price, but it isn't always the easiest thing to use. Have a look at PaintShop Pro and Photoshop Elements, both around the $100 - 125 mark, and likely to do everything you will need for some time.

I find GIMP fine to use for most things, it's a good PS substitute. But if you can afford PS, then probably you should invest in it. Like I've said, GIMP is a good program, but I think most people will say to go with PS.

Um, I don't know how many on here are post-secondary students but for those of you who are, you should check out the bookstore on your campus because you can probably get PS at a discount. Here at the U of A, they sell it for ~$200.

Thanks for the link tomorrowstreasures , I'll certainly check it out. I'll probably give GIMP a go for a while and see how I go.

That's a VERY good suggestion! Even if you are way over highscool age and no longer in school, many local universities and college bookstores will just sell you the educational disks, with no or very little verification
