Purgatory Brook is becoming one of my favorite places to explore. From Upper to Lower falls it's about 3 miles, but I think I prefer the brook near lower falls. It's amazing and I can't wait to go back when the mountain laurel blooms.
These falls and the area just downstream of it were once part of a sawmill operation built in 1811. Just at the falls themselves there is the remains of a dam and further downstream all kinds of ruined machinery and a bridge. It burned down in 1960(ish), but I don't know when it ceased operations. I have weird old machinery shots somewhere...

Seriously, I don't know why this is a brook when a couple weeks ago a tiny rivulet in the woods of Andover, MA was called Skug River. Yah, maybe when it grows up.
