Playing With Adapters and Lacy Phacelias.

When I bought my first SLR about 4 years ago, my partner - in response to my sighing over the cost of macro lenses - surprised me with a wide angle/macro lens adaptor from Photojojo. Of course it's no substitute for a macro lens, but it does allow me to focus at a closer range, and I decided to take it out and give it a try with my present SLR. (Canon 50D).

Why not try extension tubes? Cheaper and minimal degradation on the amount of light. Not too long ago that was the only way.

Andrew: I've read about extension tubes, but have yet to pop into my local camera shop and chat them up about them. Not a bad idea. :-)

just an FYI, if you do start using tubes you will need a tripod or something to hold the camera motionless. At those magnifications even the tiniest amount of movement is really noticeable. Like crazily so.

a DIRT cheap way to get decent results for cheap is a reversing ring and a 50mm lens mounted BACKWARDS on the camera. The focus is achieved by moving the camera (mounted on a tripod) closer and farther away from the subject. I played in this way quite a bit years ago and it works well but it's not the easiest...but it IS the cheapest if you already have a 50mm. I believe you can use any lens (though rings may not be easily findable) but I've only played w/the 50mm. Reversing Rings

Thanks for the tip, Wicked dark. I'm lazy about tripods but it's really time I started stepping up and using them more.

Marko, I've heard about lens reversing. Does it only work with prime lenses?
