Default First Forray into Flower Photography

    Hey guys!

So, I have no background in photography.. My father owns a nice camera so I thought I would fool around with it a bit in the past few weeks. I am just learning about all sorts of things like ISO, what SLR means, different functions, etc.

I took this picture today and I kind of liked it, so I thought I would share with you folks. Enjoy! I don't even know what kind of flower it is to be honest :/

I should mention that the picture in unaltered. I don't have any photo software yet and all the settings are on auto as I am not sure how utilize them properly. I have an exam on Monday and then I have lots of free time in the summer to learn =)

This is the show forum so i won't critique this in depth. Just wanted to say the flower is quite nicely rendered especially for a first attempt. One important thing to know about this type of photography is to be aware of distractions like busy backgrounds that compete with the main subject.
    Nice shot!!

This may be the show forum, but I am always very open to critique.. At this point all I need to do is learn, I don't know much at all, so if you could point things out so that I might become more aware that would be great

I was just going to add that the flower is a 'Star Gazer' lily and that lilies are a difficult flower to choose for a close-up just because of the DOF. It is cool the way all the stamens just appear to float.
