Default Import format WMV or AVI

I have a camcorder Sony DCR-HC22E (Optical 20x zoom) with firewire link to PC and loads of tapes which I want to transfer to main hard drive.

The file is 817 MB with WMV and 5.6 GB with AVI from same section of tape 28 minutes which makes me think the WMV file is not as good but once as an AVI file what then is there an advantage?

As yet not found a program to edit with did use a DVD recorder with hard drive but it died so lost my way to edit. Any advise please. Eric

AVI will give you more data for editing and it is a more universal format. WMV is proprietary to Microsoft and is really a media streaming format for the web.

Greg gives good advice here. AVI is more like RAW whereas WMV is more like JPEG if that makes sense.

That I understand so take snap shots for AVI but watch on TV in WMV format. Thanks for that comparison so easy to understand.
