Thanks Iggy. We had a talk by a bird photographer at our camera club meeting. He indicated that for birds in flight to take the pictures at a speed of at least 1/1000 sec. Because of that I chose the speed and the f stop and that resulted in an iso of 800. I realize that for these pictures I could have had a lower speed and thus a lower iso, however I was going back and forth betwen in flight pictures and still pictures and these were all hand held. It was the first time ever using 400 and I was surprised how much movement there is. It is really hard to hold it still. It was enough to get used to the rental 100-400 which I had never used before let alone constantly change the settings. That would have scrambled my brain. At least at my current expertise.
