We just have our winter tires (more little stud thingies on it). Chains aren't allowed in some area's as it tears up the roads..well ours at least as they are horrible.

One is only suppost to drive 25kms along it but most don't and if you go slipping..it's into a little snowbank..although we have yet to do that.

I think the creep part is when you get out and some areas you can hear the cracking..even though it's so think no worries.

I can well imagine the cracking would be very frightening to the newbie ice road driver!

Interesting little link there Greg. I hope they got that tanker out of there before it leaked anything!!

Man those ice roads are wide!!

Fascinating that the speed must be low so to stop waves under the ice.

When I was a kid we lived up north, my father had two trucks go through the ice. He always went across the lakes with the window open to escape. As a forest ranger the winter was the only time he could get to some of the remote places to check the health of the forest.

I think the ice roads here has been open for about a week or so. We also have a few reserves around here that use them to get supplies in the winter. There are alot of ice shacks out now too. Saying that I haven't been out on the ice yet, I like the idea of rock under my feet.
