You could try something like this:
    http://www.rawtherapee.com/?mitem=2

    or

    http://www.photo-freeware.net/raw-sh...essentials.php

There are others out there these two I have seen mentioned on other forums, but I have not tried either one.

Well Ken is somewhat opinionated most say and I'm not sure what his credentials are so I can't say any more.

I used to use LR 1.4 to open raw NEFs all the time (from D70 and D300). I don't know exactly what version you have, but I am thinking that you should be able to update to a newer version of ACR (LRs RAW conversion engine as I'm sure u know) for free if you poke around adobe's website or google around a bit. Heck, I might have even backed up my ACR update and still might have it kicking around somewhere if you couldn't find the download on line. I think in the beginning I had LR 1.3 and I had to do the same, and quite easily (powered by google) I found the free download, instructions and all..... and I think it was on Adobe's website. I can't imagine that the D90 has a different "flavour" of NEFs than the other models I mentioned.

Somehow I doubt I'll get an answer, at least without catching a bad case of emoticonitis, but let me get this straight...

You bought a new Nikon D90 (and possibly had other Nikon gear like lenses, flashes, or whatever from your previous D50) and when you discovered it didn't come with included software to convert RAW files, even though you already had Lightroom 1.X, you decided to buy a Canon 50D and accessories (at least a lens I assume, if not other things like spare battery, flash, etc) instead, and then also bought Lightroom 2.X for good measure?

So I can imagine we'll be seeing some good deals on Nikon equipment on eBay in the near future? I hope you got a full refund on the new D90 body at least.
