HI Iggy, I never would have bought it but my daughter needed it for a course she was taking. The instructor said to just download the trial but she had done that back in the spring. So we thought to buy it for her.

I must confess that I thought that it might be more 'user friendly' then I find gimp to be. I'm not sure that it is now.

I am thinking of downloading the trial of paint shop pro and see what I think.

Sorry if this was already suggested, but have you considered Adobe Elements? Staples usually has the stand alone package for around $100. It's not as robust as gimp or cs4, but it's pretty darn good value. It supports ACR and you get a catalog!

thanks 1putts. yes it's in the mix. I've downloaded the trial for paint shop pro and will download the trial for adobe and see which I prefer. if either. I may end up with what I have: GIMP and Picasa. Maybe the grass is not always greener...

Good suggestion, I was thinking the same thing. I had PS CS3 for a long time (call it an extended demo) but when I got my new computer I wanted to own legit software and opted to save money on Elements. I have to say I am very pleased. As 1putts says it has a catalog, many available plug-ins, and I later noticed it even offers really great lens distortion and perspective corrections -another little bonus.

There's honestly nothing I miss from CS3- I used to get to tinker in LAB colour mode but it's nothing I really needed, and so far Elements' 8-bit limitations haven't been a factor for me.
